The Statistical Sciences Laboratory conducts research in statistical methodology that supports mental health research, while providing technical assistance and research support and consultation to other SSRD Laboratories and divisions at NKI.

Development of clinical trial and quasi-experimental design methods..

Development of cost effectiveness methodologies.

Development of methods to estimate the size of elusive populations (homeless, multiple system users).

Development of quality assurance tools.

  • Methods~

Statistical theory in support of health services research
    Cost-effectiveness methodologies
Methods to estimate the size of populations using multiple systems
Clinical trial and quasi-experimental design methods
Use of propensity scores in HLMs*
Onset and duration of intervention effects

    Quantitative policy analysis
Capacity and extended capacity estimates related to disaster planning
    Cultural competency measurement
    • Scale development and establishment of psychometric properties
Impact of MMA on Dual Eligibles

  • Selected Projects ~

Methodology: Gene Laska, Morris Meisner
1. Development of cost-effectiveness methodologies
2. Development of methods to estimate the size of "hard to count" populations

Training, Technical Assistance: Kim Hopper, Carole Siegel, Judy Samuels, Gene Laska, Mary Jane Alexander
1. Dissertation supervision, mentoring of fellows and training in mental health policy and research methods to students at NYU Wagner School of Public Service, Columbia Mailman School of Public Health, NIMH K-awardees, and to residents at NYU Department of Adult Psychiatry, School of Medicine
2. Technical assistance to consumer organizations notably MHEP and HALI.

Research Support: Gene Laska, Morris Meisner, Dave Bertollo, Dei-In Tang, Howard Kushner. Joseph Wanderling
1. Research design and analyses consultation for NKI researchers
2. Research design and analyses support of SSRD projects

International Research: Gene Laska, Carole Siegel, Kim Hopper, Dave Bertollo

1. Design, conduct, analyses and dissemination of findings of a WHO sponsored cross national study on the long term recovery prospects of persons with schizophrenia and related psychotic disorders resulting in the publication of Hopper, et al.: Recovery from Schizophrenia: International Perspectives, Oxford Press, 2007.

2. Development of a PC-based information system for international use
3. Development and training in the use of a mental health information system in the Peoples Republic of China
