World Health Organization Collaborating Center for Training and Research in
Mental Health and in the Prevention of Substance Abuse
Mission
The WHO Collaborating Center for Training and Research in Mental Health and in
the Prevention of Substance Abuse at NKI-NYU conducts a program that includes:
- epidemiologic studies of the etiology and course of mental illness;
- transfer of information systems technologies and development of
information systems methodologies which are useful across cultural and
national boundaries and which are flexible enough to allow modification to
meet local needs;
- development of methodologies for studying the impact of psychological
problems on general health care services;
- services research concerned with cost-efficient care delivery;
- studies in mental health economics;
- development and application of statistical methodologies to mental health
problems;
- development of medical curricula on addictive illness for international
dissemination;
- organization and training of an international cadre of senior
professionals for medical education programs in addictive illness and for the
dissemination of the results of treatment research; and
- development and dissemination of a cross-national evaluation of treatment
programs for addiction.
